About
Born as Harold Elwin "Bo" Bice III on November 1, 1975 in Huntsville, Alabama, he is an American singer and musician who joined American Idol's season 4.
He was nicknamed "Humphrey Boggarts" by his grandmother as a child in the family, and later it was shortened to, as he is now populrly known as, "Bo". At 9, he first made his mark by winning in a local school competition. He and his siblings, mother and stepfather were always moving from one city to another, and finally when he was 15, they moved to England because his stepfather was assigned by Coca-Cola in Europe. He spent his teenage years in Gerrards Cross and Seer Green and his family's neighbor was the Ozzy Osbournes. He attended London Central High School, which is a Department of Defense school primarily for children whose parents served in the military or worked in the U.S. Embassy. In high school, you would see him carrying his guitar everywhere, he also played football and atteneded proms and had several girlfriends. It was around this time that he worked with some English alternative rock musicians. In fall of 1993, he dropped out of high school to move back to Alabama, where he earned his GED,and attended classes at Calhoun Community College. Upon graduating from Calhoun, and spending a semester at the University of North Alabama in Florence, he turned professional and performed in shows across the U.S., U.K., Ireland and Eastern Europe. In 2005, he was discovered to have been charged with cocaine possession and marijuana possession before he auditioned for Idol, but as with fellow contestant Scott Savol, he had been forthcoming to Idol producers about the arrests, and was consequently allowed to remain in the competition.
Using a Southern Rock musical approach, Bice did not fit into the normal American Idol mold but his early perfomance of The Allman Brothers Band's The Whipping Post drew raves from judges and and established him as one of the competition's favorites. In Alabama, May 24 was declared as "Bo Bice Day" by Governor Bob Riley. In fact Bice's pride of being an Alabama native resulted in adoption of the hit song Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrdas his "theme" during his tenure in American Idol.
