blink-182

blink-182, (on lowercase; pronounced as blink one eighty two) is an American punk-rock band that was famous because of their songs "What's My Age Again?" and "All The Small Things". The up-beat tempo of their songs attracted a lot of teenagers in their time, not minding their humorous way of putting up their songs. A lively unserious band of the 90's has been able to grow as they stay further in the music industry as evidenced by their latest offerings such as "Not Now" and "Another Girl, Another Planet".

[edit] About

This band was originally named Blink and was composed of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Scott Raynor in San Diego, California in 1992. A year after, they managed to release an amateur album recorded at home and produced around fifty copies which were barely sold and the gig that followed the said album was a flop as well. Rising up against the challenge, the band recorded yet another demo tape entitled Buddha. A year after, Blink signed up with Cargo Records which led to their full-length album which also included some of the songs from their previous demo tapes and the album was entitled Cheshire Cat.

A legal connflict with a similarly named Irish band led them to attach the digits 182 to their name Blink and eventually uncapitalizing the first letter, hence, blink-182. The minor revision in the band's name coincided with their incredible exposure while in a world tour with Pennywise and NOFX.

blink-182 signed up with MCA after a successful fan-expansion due to the release of 3rd EP entitled Dude Ranch; in 1999, the band released Enema Of The State. The band had a new member, Travis Barker, who replaced Scott Raynor on drums.

A nice new combo as it seemed, the band released a limited-edition The Mark, Tom And Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back) in 2000. Another album followed in 2001, Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. A self-titled album followed in 2003 which literally rocked the world of their fans.

After the band announced an Indefinite Hiatus in a concert in Southern Asia, allegedly because two of the band members have been having some friction, a career-long Greatest Hits album was released, which the critics and fans decided to be the songs that punk-rock enthusiasts will look back in the future years.

Starting out with songs such as "Dammit", "All The Small Things" and "What's My Age Again?"; the band was an ultra-magnet for kids because of the simplicity and fun in their songs. While others might remark that the songs they produce lack depth, their latest and post-disband releases "Not Now" and "Another Girl, Another Planet" is an evidence that their music have matured and that they had made a mark in the genre they belong to.

[edit] Trivia

  • A lot have been reported regarding the meaning of "182" in the band's name. They said it was the number of times that the word "fuck" was uttered by Al Pacino in the movie Scarface.
  • However, the band clears that the numbers were picked at random and had no meaning whatsoever.
  • blink-182 also appeared in an episode of South Park where they were against illegal music downloading.
