About
All we've wanted to do since we started this stuff is take some hip-hop lyrics and put them on top of funk. And not just that funk where you're at a party with your people and some joint goes on, and you start nodding your head and quickly interrupt YOURSELF (since you're macking it someone) to say something like 'oh hey, this is a dope song'. NO. That ain't the kind of funk we're talking about. We're talking about that funk where you interrupt yourself to say something like "aaaaawwwwwWWWW YEAH!", stop macking, then run across the room to the DJ booth to see what that funky-ass record is, cause you GOTTA have it! That's what we're going for. We've been doing this for 12 years now, doing our best to give some funk back to hip-hop (since hip-hop's been in a taking mood with the funk) - 1) throwing some old school funk down on tape then 2) throwing some old school and new school verses and 3) going from there. And by 'going from there' we mean drink malt liquor, preferably Hurricane.
Band Members
Keith aka K.R.O. aka Jo Jo Shorty (vocals)
Keith handles the rhyming duties and lead vocals, using a throwback rhyme style with new styles stirred in. He pops up at plenty of freestyle sessions, and in the past participated in regional finals of rhyme battles (like the Blaze rhyme battle). He never met a reference he didn't like, dropping sh*t involving the Lawnmower Man, Seattle Supersonics, Cattle Mutilatations, Galactus, the videogame 'Dactyl Nightmare' and Wes Craven. And that's just six bars. He also sings lead on the all-singing, no-rhyming tracks of Big Pimp Jones in an old school soul style. Keith has a deep record collection and knowledge of music, can play three instruments (plus drum programming) and produces mix CDs 'whenever I can'. He's a vinyl record junkie and is one of the homeboys whose idea generator is always on. To know him is to want him to stop talking.
Chris aka Madd Ruckus aka Pooky (Bass)
Straight up, Chris is a bad cat. Coming from a musical family (his mother is a career singer in a touring band), Chris has extensive musical training with a heavy jazz and funk background and plays bass lefty with a right-handed bass. Yep, just like Jimi Hendrix he plays guitar upside-down. Chris provides the bass backbone of the K.R.O. and Big Pimp Jones funk and has been down with the group since 1997. While he can go nuts on the bass with finger-poppin bass licks, he prefers to lay down a deep groove on Big Pimp Jones songs. Chris usually gets a lot of love from bassists of other bands, especially during solos. Chris has a deep knowledge of the funk and soul and is one of those cats you can hum a tune to and have him that sucker in about 10 seconds on bass. Chris plays at last five instruments, all with music-teacher skill. -
Greg aka Chaos aka Vick Damone (Guitar)
Greg is also trained on mulitple instruments, being especially proficient on the drums and guitar (he did double instrument duty on a K.R.O. album when the drummer quit). Greg has also been down since before the first gig in 1997. Greg comes from a heavy metal background but is well-schooled in the old soul, which is a main part of Big Pimp Jones' funk - with - traces - of - rock style. Greg is insanely animated at Big Pimp Jones shows, jumping around and running back and forth into the audience like a hyper wind-up toy.
Steve aka Sweet Toof (Drums)
Steve is the child prodigy of the group (easily younger than the other guys) and the seventh person providing the beats for Big Pimp Jones. His heavily-schooled music background amounts to the most interesting beats ever for Big Pimp Jones. His only studio work so far is on 'Dollar Major, Neighborhood Playa', but he's been down with the band for a few years already. He has a vast amount of musical knowlege, courtesy of his father's 5,000+ record deep collection - he seems familiar with every song ever recorded! Steve plays three instruments with expert ability (a few of the guitar solos on Dollar Major are Steve).
Jay aka Tondef (DJ)
Tondef was in Big Pimp Jones a while back, when the band name was K.R.O. and the House Band of the Apocalypse and he went by J-Wing. Tondef participates in DJ competitions around the mid-Atlantic (and always finishes high when it's all said and done). Jay is the newest addition to the band, joining in April 2005. He provides scratches, sound effects, intro parts and even beats for Big Pimp Jones live. Jay also writes graffiti and has designed album covers for regional bands. He's tagged a few things in his day and has also designed t-shirts, stickers, fonts and some interior walls in people's homes and apartments!
