Ben Folds is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, performer and a multi-instrumentalist. He began his music career as a member of Ben Folds Five. When the band has disbanded, he pursues his career as a solo performer. His first solo album was Rockin' The Suburbs.

Ben Folds was born on September 12, 1966 at Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His fathe was a builder and carpenter and because of that, he moved frequently throughout his childhood. He did not have friends so when his sad, he became attached to his piano which his father bought when Ben was 9 years old.

Ben loves to listen to the songs of Elton John. He attended high school in R.J. Reynolds High School at Winston-Salem, and during his high school days, Ben played in several bands as pianist, bassist or drummer.

In 1987, Ben and his friend Jay Pichardo joined the band Majosha. The band released several records. They joined the Battle of The Bands at Duke University in 1988 and won. Gradually their popularity grew and they played larger and farther flung gigs.

In 1989, they recorded Shut Up and Listen to Majosha. They also did a dance mix Get That Bug that was released in Japan. In early 1990, Majosha broke up. Ben decided to formed new band called Pots and Pans with Evan Olson on bass and Brett Uzzell on guitars and vocals. Ben played drums. They lasted for only a month, after which Evan and Breet went to form Bus Stop with Ben's brother Chuck Folds and Eddie Walker.

Ben transferred to Nashville to pursue his music career. He formed a new band, Judy's Power Bill, that attracts major labels. He played drums as a session musician.

In 1993, Ben transferred to New York and began to join theatre troupes. He enjoyed his work and forgot to pursue his musical career. He also played weekly gigs at Sin-e'. It was there that Ben Folds Five started which composed of Ben Folds, Robert Sledge and Darren Jessess. They signed a recording contract under Caroline Records and released their self-titled debut album 1n 1995.

In 2001, the band broke up. Ben decided to pursue his career as a solo performer. He signed up a recording contract under Sony Records and released his first solo album, Rockin The Suburbs.
