[edit] About
Belle and Sebastian were formed in 1996 at Glasgow by "Stuart Murdoch" and "Stuart David". The two met on a government training scheme and recorded some demos which was heard by Jeepster executives who then was teaching in the Stow College Music Business Course. In that same year, the duo released their debut album, Tigermilk under Electric Honey Records.
Because of the warm reception they get from the audience, the duo became a band. They recruited, "Stevie Jackson" on guitar and vocals, "Isobel Campbell" for cello, "Chris Geddes" on keys and "Richard Colburn" on drums. Jeepster Records signed the band a recording contract in August 1996. They released their second album, If You're Feeling Sinister in November 1996. Before the album was about to record, "Sarah Martin" on violin joined the band.
Their next album, The Boy with the Arab Strap was released in 1998. It chartered at #12 in the UK Charts and #15 on Top Heatseekers Chart. The album features the single, "It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career" which became one of the great songs of all time. Another new member in the name of "Mick Cooke" joins the band.
In 2000, they released their next album, Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant which became the band's first top 10 albums in the UK Charts. It features the single, "Legal Man" which landed at #15 on the UK Singles Chart. Stuart left the band in 2001. In 2002, Isobel left the group. In that same year, they left Jeepster Records and went to Rough Trade Records.
They released their next album, Dear Catastrophe Waitress in 2003. It issued the singles, "Step into My Office, Baby" and "I'm A Cuckoo". Their next album, The Life Pursuit was released in 2006. The album landed #3 on the Top Independent Albums Chart, #8 in the UK Albums Chart and #65 on the US Billboard 200. It also features the singles, "Funny Little Frog" which peaked at #13 in the UK Singles Chart, and proved to be their highest charting single, "The Blues Are Still Blue" and "The White Collar Boy".
