Based On A True Story was released on April 24, 2001 under Elektra records. The album ranked no.14 on the The Billboard 200 and no.6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The first single in the album "Gangsta (Love 4 The Streets)" hit no.57 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. The second single "Keep It Gansta" featuring Snoop Dogg ranked no.61 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. The third single "Superwoman" ranked no.34 on the Billboard Hot 100.
