Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow is one of the most successful adult contemporary singers. He dominated pop music during the latter half of the '70's. He has achieved a Billboard hit singles and multi-platinum albums. He won the American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist for three consecutive years. Barry has sold more than 75 million copies worldwide. His 2006 album Greatest Songs of the Fifties became number one.

Barry Alan Pincus better known as Barry Manilow was born on June 17,1943 in Brooklyn, New York. His father left him when he was two years old so he uses his mother's maiden name instead. By the age of seven, he was a budding artist taking accordion lessons and playing on a neighbor's piano.
Barry graduated from Brooklyn's Eastern District High School. Deciding to make music his career, he attended Julliard School of Music, which he paid for by working in the CBS mail room. Barry became musical director of the CBS show Callback.
In 1971, Barry met Bette Midler. He hired him as her pianist, arranger and music director. In the later part of that year, he signed a recording contract under Bell Records {now called Arista Records). His debut album Barry Manilow I was released in 1973, the album did not do so well in the sales. Later, Bell Records became Arista Records. Clive Davis, the owner of Arista asked Barry to record the pop song Brandy, Barry instead changed the title of the song to Mandy. He put in his second album Barry Manilow II, the single Mandy became a huge hit. His next follow up single from the album, It's A Miracle reached the Top 20 of the Billboard Charts.
His third album was Tryin' To Get The Feelin was released in 1975. His single "I Write The Songs", became number one in the music charts worldwide. The album went triple platinum. Barry became a superstar; he even won the "Top New Male Vocalist" and many more awards.
His next album, This One's For You released in 1976 was also an instant hit. His single, "Weekend in New England" made into the top ten and his another track, "Looks Like We Made It" became number one. This album was his biggest sales. It has sold over four million copies. In that same year, His TV Special, The Barry Manilow Special won an Emmy Award for being the Best Musical Special.
In 1978, his album Even Now was released. This is another hit for Barry. It is a triple-platinum album. Three of his singles from this said album hit the top ten. The likes of Can't Smile Without You, Copacabana and Somewhere in the Night.
Barry has more than twenty albums, including his compilations. Among his albums are such diverse musical styles as The Greatest Songs of the Fifties (2006), Manilow Scores: Songs from Copacabana and Harmony (2004), Manilow Sings Sinatra (1998), Singin' with the Big Bands (1994), Showstoppers (1991), Swing Street (1987), 2:00 A.M. Paradise Café (1984), and many others, including 38 Top 40 Hits. Barry has also produced album for other artists, including Bette Midler, Nancy Wilson, and Dionne Warwick have been nominated for Grammy Awards.
Barry has been supporting some charitable and humanitarian institutions around the world. He also has his own foundation, The Manilow Fund for Health and Hope. He is also the national spokesperson for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Rolling Stone magazine proclaimed Barry, The Showman of Our Generation
