Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand is an award winning American singer, theatre, composer, film producer, director and an actress. She is one of the most successful female artists in the history of entertainment. Her album The Broadway Album is an unexpected success.

Barbra Streisand was born on April 24, 1942 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn New York to parents Emmanuel Streisand and Diana Ida Rosen. Barbra graduated at Erasmus High School. She never went to College.

At 18, she join a talent competion in The Lion, a Greenwhich Village club and won. After winning the competition, she became a nightclub performer.

In 1962, Barbra appeared on Broadway via the musical play I Can Get It For You Wholesale. In that same year, she signed a recording contract under Columbia Records. She released her first album, The Barbra Streisand which won for her two grammy awards.

Barbra has also appeared in many TV Shows including The Judy Garland Show. She also have TV Special entitled My Name is Barbra and Color Me Barbra.

Barbra has more than 60 albums. All of them became hit. In the late 70's Barbra was named as the most successful female singer in the United States.

During 1982, Stephen Holden, a New York Times music critic wrote that Barbra was the most influential mainstream American Pop Singer since Frank Sinatra.

Barbra released The Broadway Album in 1985 which was an unexpected success. Barbra won Best Female Vocalist in Grammy Awards for this album. It was her 10th Grammy Awards.

In 1993, after 27 years in the limelight, Barbra annouces her first public concert tour. Tickets were sold out less than one hour following the announcement. The concert was named by Time Magazine as "The Music Event of The Century". Barbra Streisand: The Concert became the top grossing concert of the year which earned 5 Emmy Awards and Peabody Award.

Barbra has done several movies also. Her first movie was a Broadway hit Funny Girl. She won her first Best Actress Award in Oscars for this movie. Her recent movie was in 2004, she was cast in the comedy film Meet The Fuckers with Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro.

Barbra has won many awards. She has two Oscar Awards, six Emmys, eleven Golden Globe, ten Grammy's, Tony Awards. She received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. She was also named as the Top-selling female recording artist in the United States. Barbra will be inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
