Baduizm was released on February 11, 1997 through Kedar Entertainment. This debut album of Erykah Badu was a result when she impressed Kedar Massenburg when her demo CD before she became famous reached him. On its release the album charted at no. 1 in the Billboard Top R&B charts on 1997 and stayed for two weeks.

Nonetheless, the album was led by its hit single "On & On" which topped the Hot R&B charts on that same year. The album garnered two Grammy Awards: best R&B album and best female R&B vocal performance for "On & On" and was certified 3x platinum by the RIAA.
