About

Joy Olasunmibo Ogunmakin or better known by the stage name Ayo was born on September 18, 1980 in Cologne, Germany. Her father was a part-time DJ while her mother was a gypsy. As a child, she grew up amidst Pink Floyd and Fela Kuti, The Soul Children and Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and the hero of juju music, Prince Sunny Adé. It was in the mid-80s when she first studied the violin before moving to piano and guitar between the ages of 10 and 14.

At 21, she flew to London to find herself and dwell between Paris and New York, two capitals that accurately sum up her musical identity. In Paris, she held an initial acoustic solo concert with British soul brother Omar and jammed alongside Cody Chesnutt.

In the late 2005, she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy named Nile.

In early 2006, she signed to Polydor and recorded her very first album Joyful (the English translation of her Yoruba name) within five days inside Sony Music Studios in New York City under the production of Jay Newland. The album buoyed by the lead single Down on My Knees.
