About
Officially formed in 1996 under Atlantic Records, Athenaeum was an alternative rock band which hails from Greensboro, North Carolina. Former member Nic Brown and Mark Kano first performed in 1990 at an eighth grade dance, and after several changes to the lineup they recorded an album in 1995 with Alex McKinney and Grey Brewster widely known as The Green Album. It sold 10,000 copies.
In 1998, after being signed by Atlantic, Athenaeum released a debut album, Radiance, which contained chart-topper hits like What I Didn't Know and Flat Tire.
But at the band was working on their second album, Nic Brown left the band to attend college. He was replaced by Jeremy Vogt who has performed with bands like Tonic and The Connells. In 2001, Grey Brewster also left the band, and was successfully replaced by Mike Garrigan, a singer / songwriter from Collapsis.
By September that year, their self-titled second album was released. However, due to the September 11 attacks, the band received little promotion from their label and relatively little attention from their audience.
The band continued to perform until three years after, eventhough Atlantic eventually dropped them from their label. They released their third album in 2002. Named Hourglass, it contained outtakes and unreleased songs and demos from Athenaeum.
They performed their last show on December 28, 2004 before disbanding and later forming a new band.
