[edit] About
Born Astrud Weinert on March 29, 1940 in the state of Bahia, Astrud Gilberto spent her childhood in Rio de Janeiro. She immigrated to the United States in the early 1960s, and started her singing career in 1963, the day she was invited by her then husband João Gilberto to perform with him in the Getz/Gilberto album together with Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The couple parted ways in the mid-1960s.
Her successful and very well-loved performance on “The Girl from Ipanema” earned her a ticket to her first solo album, The Astrud Gilberto Album, in 1964. It was an instant best-seller and was even nominated Album of the Year. She continued doing renditions of Brazilian bossa nova and American jazz, including the hits Fly me to the Moon,” “The Shadow of your Smile,” “It Might as Well be Spring,” and “Love Story.” She also took time writing her own songs, which were featured in Astrud Gilberto Now and That Girl From Ipanema. Aside from using seven different languages in her recordings, Gilberto also did TV commercials entitled “Number One to the Sun” for Eastern Airlines. Furthermore, she performed at night-clubs starting 1982 in New York, London and Chicago, breaking records in terms of attendance.
Astrud Gilberto formed a sextet comprised of piano, bass, drums, trombone, guitar and percussion in 1982, and her very own son Marcelo Gilberto became her bassist; the group went on tours around Europe, US, Japan, and Canada. Together with Marcelo and another son, Gregory Lasorsa, Astrud formed Gregmar Productions, Inc. in 1990. Marcelo was co-producer of Live in New York and Temperance, while Gregory played the guitar in Temperance’s “Beautiful You.”
From the monumental success of “The Girl from Ipanema,” Astrud Gilberto has certainly gone a long long way, releasing over a dozen albums until 2002. She may have entered the music industry courtesy of her ex-husband even without any musical experience, but she lasted this long because of her naturally wonderful singing voice and such unique interpretations. Her music is a blend of Brazilian rhythms and American Jazz.
