Antonio Carlos Jobim

There would be no bossa without Antonio Carlos Jobim and his equally important but criminally ignored songwriting partner, poet "Vinicius de Moraes". Even if they can’t name him right away as the composer, just about everybody knows some of the bossa nova music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Antonio was a Grammy Award-winning Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist. Blame "The Girl From Ipanema", that staple of elevators and supermarkets worldwide. His dozens of beautiful melodies have become part of the standard song repertoire throughout the world.

About

Antonio Carlos Jobim or "Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim" in real life was born on January 25, 1927 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Antonio was also known as "Tom Jobim". Antonio was just another middle-class Carioca "beach boy" hanging out in the bars and coffeehouses along the white sand of Copacabana and Ipanema until the day a peddler and selling roses. Originally he was headed for a career as an architect. Yet by the time he turned 20, the lure of music was too powerful, and so he started playing piano in nightclubs and working in recording studios.

Antonio soon began to immerse himself in a serious way in his first love, music, and he never did get around to becoming an architect as he had planned. He made his first record in 1954 backing singer "Bill Farr" as the leader of "Tom and His Band". He became popular in Brazil when he teamed up with poet "Vinícius de Moraes" to write the music for the play Orfeu de Conceição in 1956. In 1958, "João Gilberto" recorded some of Antonio's songs, which had the effect of launching the phenomenon known as bossa nova.

The influence of the resulting record soon spread to the USA, where "Stan Getz" and "Charlie Byrd" made his compositions hugely popular. Although Antonio did record, and performed at Carnegie Hall with Getz, Byrd, and Dizzy Gillespie in 1962, it is as a composer that his influence remains huge, with tunes including "Desafinado", "How Insensitive", "The Girl From Ipanema", and "One Note Samba". The maestro's jazzy, instrumental side is represented with 1967's "Wave", which many consider to be the best single work he ever released.

He was now an international star, and many albums followed. He went on to explore Franco-Brazilian impressionist textures for orchestra — often including a jazz-based rhythm section — working with masterful arrangers, such as his fellow Brazilian" Eumir Deodato" on the l970 album Tide.

For the next three decades, He would collaborate with many well-known jazz figures, including "Ron Carter", and orchestrators such as "Nelson Riddle" on The Wonderful World Of Mr. Jobim and "Claus Ogerman" on The Composer Of Desafinado Plays. Before his death in December 8, 1994, his praises were sung for many years by Frank Sinatra and recorded with Sting on his last recording, Brasiliero. Antonio continued making superb music to the end of his life.
