About

Born Amy Jade Winehouse on September 14, 1983 in Camden, London England but grew up in Southgate, North London to a taxi-driver father and a mother who's a pharmacist. While at Southgate, she attended Ashmole School. She grew up listening to different types of music, from Sarah Vaughn to Salt 'n' Pepa where the latter became her influence when she founded an amateur rap group, Sweet 'n' SOur. Unfortunately, the group was short-lived. After the unsuccessful attempt to fame, she went to pursue a different path by attending the Sylvia Young Theatre School in Marylebone at the age of twelve but was expelled the following year for "not applying herself" which led her to attend BRIT School, a free institution. Through this, she has improved her musical skills which became her ticket to the music industry.

Amy Winehouse's close friend and fellow soul singer, Tyler James passed her demo tape to A&R person where she was soon discovered and readied her to become a professional singer at the tender age of 16. She was immediately signed to Island/Universal under 19 Management. She soon released her debut album, Frank on October 2003 which not only received strong reviews but also earned her 2 nominations from Brit Awards. Aside from the nomination, her single Stronger Than Me won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in 2004. Following the success of its predecessor, her sophomore effort Back to Black released on October 2006 received even more good results. This record won her a Brit Award for Best Female Solo Artist on February 2007.

Despite the overwhelming success Amy is receiving, she's having problems with her personal life. She has been appearing in British tabloids in different incidents regarding her behaviour when intoxicated. Recently, she was spotted with scars after appearing at Elle Style Awards on February 14, 2007. Her spokesman explained that the cuts was due to her falling over New York streets.
