The last time Aaliyah released her album was on 1996, and it took her almost 5 years to released another one - her self-titled album Aaliyah. The coming album of Aaliyah put hold as one of the strongest urban soul records during her time.

Released on July 17, 2001 by Blackground and Virgin Records in the United States, the self-titled album of Aaliyah was her third and last album recorded. Most of the tracks were written by Steve Garrett with Missy Elliott as the contributor.
Aaliyah put on a statement of maturity in the album where she performed stunningly artistic. Aaliyah was her natural self in the album, she never oversings nor over sells the song. Versatile, where she sung an array of sounds and emotions.
The album debuted at top five, but quickly jumped to number one spot following her untimely plane crash death. Overall, the album went to to be certified double platinum by RIAA selling over 3 million in the United States, and 7 million worldwide.
The album was hailed as Aaliyah's most mature project.
